Brian McKnight Jr.
Vocalstar: Who is Brian McKnight Jr.?
Brian McKnight Jr.: I’m a father, Singer/songwriter, producer, actor, photographer, Dog lover, and tech geek.
Vocalstar: Where are you from?
Brian McKnight Jr.: I am originally from LA. The valley to be exact. Right after middle school, my mother moved my younger brother, and I to North Carolina, where we lived for almost 6 years. I moved back to LA to live with my dad the day after my 18th birthday.
Vocalstar: Do you think your upbringing has contributed to your style as an artist?
Brian McKnight Jr.: My upbringing definitely contributed to my style as an artist. Everyone usually assumes that all my talent came from my father, when in fact; both sides of my family are heavy into music. My mother, and my grandmother, all my cousins, the list goes on of everyone who can ether sing, write, play, or some variation of them all. Not to say my dad isn’t one of my biggest influences, he’s without a doubt one of my favorite songwriters.
Vocalstar: Are you more of a singer or more of a song-writer?
Brian McKnight Jr.: I would consider myself more of a songwriter than a singer. I’m all about the song, I believe being a singer only helps because I’m able to convey the actual feeling of the lyrics that you’re hearing. Ive always felt you can really tell the difference when its coming from the source. Depending on the depth of the song of course.
Vocalstar: Describe the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome as an artist?
Brian McKnight Jr.: One of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome as an artist is finding myself. My own sound, my own story. With a father as a legend, it hasn’t been so much about getting out of his shadow, as much as knowing it really doesn’t matter. What made my dad who he was in the beginning is that no one sounded like him, or was doing his style of R&B. I feel like that’s exactly what I’m going to do.
Vocalstar: What’s your favorite piece of music and why?
Brian McKnight Jr.: My favorite piece of music at the moment is a cut off of Kamasi Washington’s new double disc album. It’s titled “The Space Travelers Lullaby”. It’s so beautiful. Reminds me a lot of the type of tune I would like to score for movies. Heavy John Williams feel, but with more soul. I love it. I would love to collab with both of them as well.
Vocalstar: Which artist would you love to collaborate with and why?
Brian McKnight Jr.: One artist I would love to collaborate with is Kid Cudi. I believe he would understand exactly what I’m trying to accomplish with blending rock, funk, country, and Pop R&B,
Vocalstar: Where can we expect to see you in 5 years?
Brian McKnight Jr.: In 5 years I plan on being 2-3, #1 albums in, coming off a sold our tour, and preparing for headlining sets at the major festivals like Coachella, and Stagecoach.
