Q & A’S WITH KADEEM NICHOLS
Has music always been your first career choice?
Its interesting I actually never saw myself as a musician. I actually wanted to do art (Creative Art) like painting, sketching, etc. It literally was my parents that saw the spark in me and pushed me in that directed. Even after I realized that I could sing and be musical, I still wanted to pursue painting to the point that I enrolled and got accepted into Art & Design High school in Manhattan, NY. That was very short lived due to a vehicle accident I was involved in and because of doctors ordered, I had to transfer to a school closer to home. Which is a whole story in itself.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
The best piece of advice I ever received was to “JUST BE ME (Be Yourself) “. I think its very easy to look at what other people are doing (specifically in the industry) and mimic to obtain success or fame. But I’ve learned that true happiness and success is obtained when you are unapologetically yourself and wear your character with pride. The more I let go of the caring if people are going to like “ME” the more I find the strength to be fearless in life and creativity.
What do you want to be known for?
When its all said and done and I am laying in my grave, I would like to be best known for Impacting the world with my Life and Art. I want for people to be free to be themselves and to break from the status quo of “whats cool” or “whats acceptable” and be who they were designed to be by their Creator. To be proud in being creatively awkward and take risk to obtain peace within themselves.
Which artists or producers are you the most inspired to work with?
There are so many people that are responsible for my sound and so many of those artist that I want to work with. Stevie Wonder would have to be #1. He literally was my inspiration from the beginning. I remember stealing this 4-disc CD from my dad’s collection called “The Wonders of Stevie” by Stevie Wonder, and it changed my life. I ran those discs ragged, 24/7, consistently listening to them, studying Stevie’s vocal placement, arrangements, and lyrical precision. Safe to say I became obsessed with music, which led me to pursuing music. To keep this very short my list also includes : Pharrell Williams, John Legend, Kanye West, Timbaland, Han Zimmer, GEEZ there are too many people.
Are you working on any new music right now?
I actually just got back into the creative process due to focusing on collaborating with people around Los Angeles. My wife pulled me to the side and share that she wanted me to get back into creating for myself. So right now I am going through my folders and creating art that reflects where i am in life.
How do you navigate the music industry?
The way I navigate through the industry is simple : Being Consistent and being Authentic. I’ve learned what has helped me is to be consistent in the scenes that I want to be apart of from the Studio to the Live Stage Scene. Being Authentic is not trying to be like anybody else and while doing that you can weed out the fake and phony and connect with the right people.
