Texas born, Mississippi raised but California fortified is the best way to characterize singer/songwriter Jonquia Rose. Currently a resident of Los Angeles, California this talented singer has dedicated her life to constructing meaningful commentary through song. Her latest single I Found Love is a testimony that perfectly describes where she is after overcoming the drama of becoming a single mom. Quia, as referred to by close friends and family, incorporates southern sensibilities into her music and the outcome is an audible bouquet of honest, genuine, heartfelt, factual, intentional, fun, intellectual, sexy and sometimes unexpected displays of lyricism.
Q & A’s with Jonquia Rose
If you could pick any artist, which career would you follow as a blueprint to your success?
It would be a cross between Rihanna and Jay Z. I love their entrepreneurial spirit, it goes beyond the music and there is so much I want to do in fashion, real estate and overall smart investments inside and outside the music business. I think they did well.
Do you think your upbringing has contributed to your style as an artist?
Yes, I came from a singing family. I saw my mother and several cousins become the voice of many churches and I always thought it was cool when we’d walk in a church and the pastor mention a Rose being present and ask one of them to sing. I grew up listening to and dissecting old school R&B and gospel. That upbringing was very instrumental to my writing style and how I tackle certain songs.
Has music always been your first career choice?
I fell in love with music at such a young age. While most kids aspire to become doctors and lawyers, I aspired to be a singing dentist. I’m sure that sounds crazy yet after obtaining my first degree in dentistry I realized it wasn’t for me and music would always be apart of my life. I feel I’m able to impact more people this way.
When do your ideas come to you?
I try to be aware of my body, mind, and spirit. Mindfulness is very important to me. With that being the case, I come up with ideas for songs, discussions, quotes and mantras when I’m able to sit and journal or reflect about my day. I find myself doing that in the car because it’s quiet.
