Vocalstar: Who is James Owens Jr.?

JIIM: I’m a new upcoming R&B, Pop artist that goes by the name JIIM. I’m also a Producer, Singer-Songwriter, Musician. My music career started when I was 10 years old traveling, playing drums for my family Gospel Quartet group. From then on I started picking up different instruments, which lead to me producing music. Once I learned enough about music production I wanted to start writing songs to the music I would make. Not long after that I fell in love with the sound I was creating but it wasn’t until I did my first performance in high school during my 10th grade Christmas concert, that I knew I had something to offer the world. Now here I am. One thing to know about me is I believe the biggest gift in the world is confidence, and being yourself.

VS: Where are you from? Do you think your upbringing has contributed to your style as an artist?

JIIM: I’m from a small city called Saginaw, Michigan where there isn’t many musical outlets. With that, I learned to motivate & push myself to keep working towards, believing in & never give up on my gift. One place that most musicians in the city went to express their musical gifts, was church. Growing up and playing in church was almost more pressure than playing a professional show. Lol They forced you to learn fast or you couldn’t play during service, which I understood. But it didn’t stop there for me being that my dad was a professional guitarist by the name of James Owens Sr. which exposed me to all other genres & if you listen to my music you’ll hear elements from them all. So yes my upbringing has all to do with my style as an artist.

VS: What’s a typical day like for you artistically? What inspires you musically?

JIIM: A typical day for JIIM is waking up getting situated while listening to Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora or sometimes Soundcloud. 50% of the time I hear something that inspires a new song. That other 50% most times happen from daily experiences which could be anything. Conversation, movie, being cut off on the road or even thinking about my future.

VS: Describe the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome as an artist?

JIIM: The biggest thing for me so far has been allowing opinions from those close to me have me question if what I have is good enough or if I should continue doing what I love. During that time I learned that in most cases, its not until those from the outside rock with you that they will jump on board.

VS: Which artist would you love to collaborate with and why?

JIIM: I would love to work with Chance The Rapper. I love the diversity in his music & that’s definitely something I can relate to.
