Tay Walker grew up in Inglewood, California playing piano and singing in church. He is a self-taught piano player as well as vocalist. His musical journey is very unorthodox as he began as the keyboardist for The Internet (Syd, 2009) while still being enrolled in college. He naturally developed a close friendship with Syd who advised him to leave the group in 2011-12 to pursue a solo career. Tay’s career didn’t  sky rocket it’s been more of a steady rise. It has led him to working exclusively with Mac Miller, singing background for Chance the Rapper and winning the reality show “Signed” and being offered a contract from Rick Ross’s Mayback Music Group (MMG) which in the end he turned down.

As one can see people quickly recognize Tay’s talent but shy away on taking chances because classic R&B is said to be a dying medium. Tay says, “It just hasn’t been expressed in the correct way”. Tay is an authentic person and artist and plans to stay true to his roots. Tay and his team feel like “One Way Street To Nowhere,” as well as the most recent music he is working on will be the material to catch people’s ear. Although he’s already caught ours.

Most Resent Albums Include:

  1. One Way Street to Nowhere (Released: May 25, 2018)
  2. 25 Hours A Day (25HAD) (Released: April 30, 2015)

Q&A’s with Tay Walker

Who is Tay Walker?

I was in the band (The Internet) I also was on the TV show signed.

Where are you from?

I’m from Inglewood CA born and raised went to high school in Menifee CA.

Do you think your upbringing has contributed to your style as an artist?

Yes my mother is my main reason for singing, she put me in piano classes and the choir as a child.

Are you more of a singer or more of a song-writer?

I’m a good mixture of both. I take them both seriously.

Describe the biggest obstacle you’ve had to overcome as an artist?

After separating from The Internet and being kind of on my own in this industry it was very scary and intimidating, but I got past that feeling and now I feel I’m getting my own traction started.

What’s a typical day like for you artistically?

Weed shop first, then the studio, then food, in that order.

What inspires you musically?

Being different and not being afraid to let your true artistic mind out on a record without being afraid of it not blowing up. That’s incredibly inspiring to me. Good music will speak louder than anything on the radio.

When do your ideas come to you?

Randomly or when I’m in bed I’ll get an idea. The beat also has a lot to do with what the idea of the song will be. I go through different emotions and they trigger words. I wrote them down immediately.

What is your favorite song you have written and why?

I don’t really have a favorite song of mine because they all mean something different. But I’m very proud of the song I have with Mac Miller before he passed away it’s called completely transparent. We both stayed up all night making it and I have very good memories of that night.

What’s your favorite piece of music and why?

Michael Jackson’s butterflies mixed with Stevie Wonders Ribbons in the Sky, but I don’t really have a favorite song either.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Stevie Wonder is the biggest inspiration, Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, Tyrese Gibson, Tank ect…

Which artist would you love to collaborate with and why?

I really want to work with H.E.R shes my new favorite artist.

Where can we expect to see you in 5 years?

In the Grammys with a few trophies, or in another country performing for thousands of people or on TV/movie screens… I got big plans

What are your dreams/ aspirations?

I own my own label and sign future artist, help my brothers achieve their dreams through me, buy my mom a house.

What’s your idea of success as an artist?

When you wake up happy and fulfilled knowing that nothing can stop you not money, not haters, knowing that you have all the support you need to get your plans accomplished.

When will you feel like you’ve made it! When I can support more than just myself and I can do it proudly. I want to be the rock my family needs.
